In Kazakhstan, the number of cancer patients increased to 182 thousand people in 2018, Kazpravda.kz correspondent quotes deputy chairwoman of the lower house Gulmira Isimbayeva as saying at the Government Hour in Majilis.

"Today, one of the most pressing problems in healthcare is fighting cancer. In 2018, the number of cancer patients increased to 182 thousand people. Every year 14 thousand people die of oncological diseases. In 2014, the death rate per 100 people was 78.3. In NKR, EKR, Akmola and Pavlodar regions this index is 1,5 times higher than the country’s average. Life expectancy of cancer patients up to five years is 50 percent. This figure in the OECD countries is from 65 to 80 percent," - said Isimbayeva.

She noted that the adopted anti-oncology programs do not provide sufficient results.

A lot of work has been accomplished, but, nevertheless, there are still problem spots. Diagnosis of malignant tumors in early stages is still on a low rate, three times lower than that in the OECD, she added.

According to Isimbaeva, the country's population often simply does not know about screening. Besides, medical specialists also work in other clinics, which tells on the quality of their work in state clinics.

Another issue is shortage of oncologists, 126 specialists short. The number of grants should be increased for training of oncologists, radiologists, chemotherapists and ethologists, she went on to say.

As a problem, Isimbayeva also named the lack of high-tech equipment and  high cost of drugs.
